(As a precursor, I wasn't sure if I was able to make a thread in this forum, but I couldn't find anything saying I couldn't... feel free to delete this if I'm wrong ) I cam across a rather fun little gadget that maps all the locations discussed in the canon, and thought it'd be rather fun to take a look at it and mosey about London. http://londonist.com/2009/11/the_london ... mapped.phpI study at King's College London (MA Medieval History ho'cha), so when I saw our hospital on it (I haven't read all the canon, but I'm nearing completion), I squeed a little. Thought some of you would enjoy it. I'm not entirely sure how accurate it is as I haven't read all the stories as of yet, so if there are discrepancies, do point them out.

O_O Medieval History? I did that in Munich and Leeds.
I got some books about that subject and I plan an extended Sherlockian tour through London for my trip in June. Maybe you wanna join me?

Oh really??? What area did you specialize in? I'm doing 13th and 14th century English history. Eee! Another Medieval fan!
I would love to join you! By then I will be needing a break from my thesis and should have read all there is to read. Would be good fun. I've accidentally stumbled along a lot of the places they filmed Sherlock, haha.

I wrote my thesis on Richard III. 13th and 14th ct England is in fact much my thing, too. Always wanted to do English history but there was no professor for that in Munich so I did a lot of Italy especially Venice there. Leeds was great fun one year of my very interest. I should have stayed there to do a PHD but I'm so not a research person. Loved to work at the congress though. Have you ever been to the IMC? If not, then you should go, it's so much fun. What is your thesis about?
I hope I'm done reading the original canon by June, I'm working on it. When I was in London last week I went to see North Gower Street on purpose. Most of the other places I had seen before and I finally went to the Sherlock Holmes museum. Wanted to do that for ages. We so need to do a proper tour!

Oh fantastic! I'm partial to Edward II myself, despite all his screw-ups. He fascinates me. What about Richard III did you write about? I haven't a firm idea about my thesis yet, but I'm thinking of looking at the abandoned and deserted villages of England, why some disappeared and others didn't. I'm going to try and find some of them, or the remains anyways, some have been excavated.
The IMC? No I haven't, just the IHR here in London. I do want to get to Leeds though.
The last time I lived in London I actually lived just off Baker Street, rightly spoiled. I live in Kilburn now, which is amusing as I just read The Blue Carbuncle, and they mentioned the area, heehee. I wasn't aware that Doyle's first house in London was right by the British Museum, I'll have to go check that out.
We should so do this and maybe do a travel diary about it, that'd be good fun!

Oh I just found my two books I have on this subject:
Alistar Duncan: Close to Holmes and David Sinclair: Sherlock Holmes's London
the second one is really good as far as I can tell. Haven't read them yet. It's what I planned for my London week in June.
Travel Diary is a good idea.
I always get confused about the three Edwards. I remember writing an essay about them but I can't recall much. I forgot so much unfortunately. Only thing I can remember is that one of them wasted all the money and one was very good with fundraising so to speak. Your thesis idea sounds really good. I wanted to do a similar thing for Italian monastery orders that had vanished or been absorbed by bigger orders. Oh, you really make me wanna get back to uni. Who knows I might do that one day.

You'll have to let me know how the books are, sound fantastic.
Edward II is the one who basically screwed everything up, had banquet while his people starved so he got a nice hot poker up his bum. Like you do. XD. Edward I was the good one really, Edward III was always at war.
